EFL Championship top scorers 22/23: Viktor Gyokeres makes a surprise appearance on the list
The 2022/23 Championship season saw Vincent Kompany’s Burnley dominate the league, losing only three matches, winning 29, and drawing 14 out of 46 games to finish top with 101 points. Sheffield United ended the season in second place with 91 points, and both clubs secured automatic promotion to the Premier League.
However, despite their impressive points total, Burnley did not have a single player in the top three goalscorers of the season. Below, Soccerway UK compiles a list of the EFL Championship top scorers 22/23.
Who was the EFL Championship top scorer in 2022/23?
The top scorer of the season was Chuba Akpom, a striker for Middlesbrough, then managed by Michael Carrick. In 38 Championship appearances, he scored 28 goals, earning him the Golden Boot as well as the EFL Championship Player of the Season award.
Akpom stood out for his intelligent movement and excellent positioning, often making late runs into the penalty area and finishing with quick, one-touch efforts. His goals played a crucial role in Middlesbrough’s strong campaign and marked one of the most productive individual seasons in the club’s recent history. He became the first player to score over 20 goals in a single season for Middlesbrough since the legendary Bernie Slaven in 1989/90.

Second on the list was Viktor Gyökeres, who played a key role for Coventry City. He featured in all 46 league matches, scoring 21 goals and providing 12 assists. His all-round contribution helped Coventry reach the play-offs as they pushed for promotion to the Premier League. In the play-off final, Gyökeres registered an assist, but Coventry were beaten by Luton Town on penalt and narrowly missed out on promotion.
Next is Carlton Morris, the striker who led Luton Town’s attack during their promotion-winning season. The English forward scored 20 goals in 44 league appearances, accounting for a significant share of Luton’s total goals. Known for his physical strength and aerial ability, Morris regularly delivered important goals that helped Luton overcome tough matches and eventually secure promotion.
Another name on the list is Joël Piroe, who scored 19 goals for Swansea City. Unlike many traditional target men, Piroe often dropped deeper to link play and create chances for his teammates. He was also known for his accurate long-range shooting, particularly with his left foot. Despite his strong individual form, Swansea finished the season in 10th place, just three points short of the play-off positions.
One of the few wide players among the top scorers was Nathan Tella, the only representative from Burnley. The winger scored 17 goals and added five assists, earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year. His season highlights included two hat-tricks against Preston North End and Hull City. With his pace and direct running, Tella was a constant threat, often beating defenders one-on-one and finishing clinically.
Also among the leading scorers was Tom Bradshaw of Millwall. He scored 16 goals in 41 league matches, many of them vital in securing points for his team. Bradshaw was known for his sharp movement inside the box, scoring from close range with quick finishes and headers. He also contributed defensively by pressing opponents, although Millwall narrowly missed out on the play-offs, finishing just one point behind Sunderland.
